Men’s Golf Wins Two of Three in Match Play

SEBRING, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Golf team won two of their three matches in the Warrior's Nancy Nichols Match Play Monday and Tuesday. The Gyrenes beat Florida College and Southeastern in the first and third rounds.

In the opening round on Monday, the Gyrenes took on the Florida College Falcons and won 3.5-1.5. Ave Maria got points from Joe Hamilton, Matt Mullen and Ty Kaufman. Hamilton had the biggest win of all the matches, leading by three with two holes left to play thus calling the match after the 16th hole. Mullen won after 17 holes, leading by two with just one left to play. Kaufman needed an extra 19th hole to settle his match, but got the win in the sudden death hole, finishing in three strokes to his opponent's four.

Ave Maria also got a half point from Neal Wheeler, who finished his match tied even after four playoff holes.

Round two was also Monday however it did not go the Gyrenes' way as they fell to the St. Thomas Bobcats 3-2. Daniel Nycum and Wheeler scored the two points for the Gyrenes. Wheeler had the most impressive win of the day for the Gyrenes, leading by four holes and calling the match with three left to play. Nycum only led by one after the 17th hole, meaning he had to play an 18th against his Bobcat opponent. Nycum took that final hole to win by two and give AMU their second point.

The fifth and deciding match was decided by just one hole but unfortunately that went to the Bobcats making AMU finish the opening day 1-1.

In the final day of competition, the Gyrenes took on the Southeastern Fire and won 3.5-1.5. Whole points came from Wheeler, Alfonso Baro Rosas and Kaufman. Baro Rosas won by three holes, Wheeler won by two and Kaufman won by one. Mullen contributed the half point in round three, however the tie was called after 18 holes, not a four-hole playoff like in the first round.

Ave Maria finished the tournament with a record of 2-1, tying them for second with Florida College and St. Thomas. Host Webber was the only undefeated team across the three rounds with wins over SCAD, Southeastern and St. Thomas. Southeastern, Point and SCAD were tied for fifth with a 1-2 record and New College of Florida finished last with a 0-3 record.

The match play concludes the fall season for the Gyrenes who now will wait patiently for the spring season. Ave Maria is currently ranked No. 6 in the NAIA Top 25 and are hoping to hold onto that high ranking throughout the winter. The final poll before the spring season will be released October 31 following the conclusion of all the tournaments played throughout the week.
