Swim Places Second in St. Thomas Tri-Meet

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Ave Maria Swim and Dive team placed second on both the men's and women's side on Saturday in a tri-meet hosted by St. Thomas. Both the men and the women took down the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans for the second time this season but fell to the host Bobcats.

The men's team had one first place finish in the meet, with Eduardo Martiniano winning the 50-yard freestyle race. Martiniano clocked a season best 21.78 seconds and beat the Bobcat swimmer by 0.32 of a second. Martiniano hit the podium three more times, placing second in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay and finishing third in the 100-yard individual medley.

Martiniano's time of 52.41 in the individual medley is also a new school record, passing the previous mark of 54.82 set by teammate Jack Keyser in the season opening meet against New College.

Martiniano led the team with his four medals. Two Gyrenes, Sam Pilkington and Lucas Thomaz, finished next on the team with three medals. Both of them received two silvers and a bronze. Pete Anderson was the final Gyrene with multiple medals, earning two silvers.

The women's team did not have any gold medals or school records but had a solid day in the pool. The Gyrenes tallied eight personal bests across the team.

Mireya Estrada and Emily Heasty led the team in medals with three. Estrada recorded one silver and two bronzes, while all three of Heasty's medals were bronze. Estrada earned her silver in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the pad at 1:00.72. The two bronzes were in the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Heasty's medals were also in the two relays and the 500-yard freestyle.

Delaney Weisbruch and Madeline Lasnoski were the other Gyrenes to finish with multiple medals.

The Gyrenes are back in the pool Wednesday, November 5, in another tri-meet taking on Indian River State College and Keiser. The meet will be hosted by Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida.
