FORT PIERCE, Fla. — The Ave Maria Swim and Dive team dropped a pair of dual meets Wednesday falling to Indian River State College and Keiser but did break one school record and set three new ones in the process. The three new records for the Gyrenes came from the diving team, a new addition to Ave Maria this season.
The broken record was on the men's side with Eli Soderberg shattering the record in the 1000-yard freestyle, beating the previous high by eight seconds. Soderberg was just a few hundredths of second from finishing in under 10 minutes with a time of 10:00.06. The previous record was set by Eli Pelzer two seasons earlier on January 20, 2024.
Wednesday's dual meets were the first taste of real competition for the newly added Ave Maria dive team, who had to wait a couple of meets before they could jump of the boards. The Gyrenes added three new events to repertoire and the record books with men's 1-meter dive, and women's 1- and 3-meter dives. On the men's side, Nathaniel Ramirez took the first jump for the Gyrenes and logged a score of 117.10. For the women. Kristyna Kubisova jumped in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter dives and scored 202 and 194 points, respectively.
In the rest of the meet, Eduardo Martiniano led the men's team in points with 593, finishing 16
th overall in pool of 45 swimmers. Pete Anderson and Michael Blawas were second and third on the team in points.
On the women's side, Delaney Weisbruch led the team in points with 528.5, finishing 24
th in a pool of 46 swimmers. Emma Heasty and Mimi Estrada rounded out the top three for the Gyrenes.
Ave Maria is back in the pool Saturday, November 8, as they close out their stretch of three competition days in the span of eight days. This upcoming meet is a solo dual with the Barry Buccaneers. The Gyrenes are the home team as they will host the meet in Fort Myers at the FGCU Aquatics Center.
