ORLANDO, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Tennis team played their final non-conference match of the season and got a win over the NCAA Division III St. Norbert Green Knights, winning 7-0. Saturday was also Ave Maria's fourth and final match at the United States Tennis Association's National Campus, and the Gyrenes leave Orlando having gone 3-1.
For the fourth match to feature a doubles round in a row, the Gyrenes took the early point winning all three doubles sets. Danil Mischanin and Andrew Soliva had the best doubles set, sweeping the Green Knights second pairing 6-0. Julien Mourad and Gianmarco Punzo won the second set 6-4 to clinch the early point. The first pairing finished up and saw the Gyrenes take that one as well, with Anderson Duggan and Joao Felipe Almeida winning 6-4.
In the singles round, none of the six pairing went to a third set. Punzo got the first of the round, winning his first set 6-1. His opponent then withdrew because of an injury in the second set.
Jaun Garcia was the first to win a proper set, sweeping his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
The clinching point was delivered by Soliva, who also won in two clean sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Just like their three other matches in Orlando, Saturday was a cross-association match for the Gyrenes meaning the other three singles pairing played out despite Ave Maria clinching the match.
Almedia was the next to finish, winning 6-1, 6-2, followed by Duggan with a 6-0, 6-3 win and Mourad with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
With the win, Ave Maria's record improves to 5-3 overall and they finish their non-conference season at 4-3.
The Gyrenes just have Sun Conference opponents from here on out, starting with Coastal Georgia Friday, March 21. The Mariners were receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches' poll, but are 3-8 on the season.
