Women’s Tennis Gets Back-to-Back Shutouts

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team got their second shutout win in as many days Saturday, beating the NCAA Division III St. Norbert Green Knights 7-0. Just like Friday, the Gyrenes did not lose a set, sweeping the doubles round and then winning all 12 sets in the singles round.

The Gyrenes only dropped two games in the doubles round, spread across two pairings. Clara Penido and Mariangel Nunez swept the first pairing, winning 6-0. Dana Nunez and Elizabeth Pince finished next with a 6-1 win to secure the doubles point, followed by Abigail Rich and Maria Hofmeister with another 6-1 win.

Penido was the first to finish in the singles round and kept her games-streak alive, winning both sets 6-0.

Dana Nunez followed suit, also with back-to-back 6-0 sets to give Ave Maria their third point.

The match clinching point was delivered by Rich, who won her pairing 6-1, 6-0.

Since Saturday was another cross-association game for the Gyrenes, the final three pairing were played out. Mariangel Nunez won the second pairing 6-3, 6-1, Pince won her pairing 6-0, 6-3, and Hofmeister completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Saturday was the second win in a row for the Gyrenes, who are now 2-3 on the year.

Ave Maria has one more non-conference match before resuming Sun play. The Gyrenes are back in Orlando at the United States Tennis Association national campus Monday as they take on the SUNY New Paltz Hawks. The Hawks are another NCAA Division III school out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The match is Tuesday, March 18, and set to start at 2:30 p.m.
