Women’s Tennis Gets First Sun Win

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team got their first conference win of the season, beating the Coastal Georgia Mariners 4-2. It is the third straight win over the Mariners for the Gyrenes, dating back to 2023.

In the opening doubles round, Coastal Georgia had to default a pairing as they only had two pairs to compete. This meant the Gyrenes only needed to win one set to clinch the opening point. Clara Penido and Mariangel Nunez accomplished that easily, winning their set 6-0.

In the singles round, Coastal Georgia had to default the sixth pairing, only sending out five players. The default gave the Gyrenes another point and put them up 2-0.

The Mariners won the top pairing to get their first point of the game.

Minutes later, the Gyrenes put CCG's backs up against the wall with Elizabeth Pince winning the fifth pairing in two straight sets 6-0, 7-5.

The Mariners got one more point before Abigail Rich got the job done for the Gyrenes in the fourth pairing. Rich dropped the first set in a tiebreaker but then came back dominantly in the next two sets, winning by a combined 12 games to four.

With the win, Ave Maria improves to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Gyrenes have one more match in the Peach State, taking on the No. 11 SCAD Bees Saturday, March 22. SCAD is 8-6 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. They defeated Florida National 4-1 Friday to remain perfect in Sun Conference play. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
