AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team got a win in their final home match of the season, beating the Warner Royals 4-0. The Gyrenes got the benefit of three defaults leading to two points and took care of business in the other pairings to secure the shutout.
Before the match, the Gyrenes celebrated Senior Day and honored the three seniors, Danna Nunez, Clara Penido and Abigail Rich, on the team.
In the doubles round, Warner had to default the third pairing, meaning Ave Maria only needed to win one pairing to get the doubles point. Rich and Penido took care of that with a 6-4 win in the top pairing.
In the singles round, Warner had to default the bottom two pairings, putting Ave Maria up 3-0.
Penido secured the match-winning point in the top pairing, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The other three Gyrenes competing all won their first set and were leading in the second set when the match was called in favor of AMU.
With the win, Ave Maria improves to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The win also punches the Gyrenes' ticket to the Sun Conference tournament April 23-25. There are two winless teams at the bottom of the standings, Warner and Coastal Georgia, with only two matches left. Even if one of them were to win out and tie Ave Maria with two wins, the Gyrenes own the tiebreaker having beaten both of them earlier in the season.
Ave Maria is on the road for their final two matches. Starting Friday, April 11, the Gyrenes travel to West Palm Beach to take on the Keiser Seahawks. Then Saturday, April 12, Ave Maria drives south to Miami Gardens to take on the St. Thomas Bobcats.
