AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team scored their first points of the 2025 season but ultimately fell 5-2 to the UMary Marauders. The Gyrenes won their first doubles pairing of the year and grabbed two of the singles pairings to record their two points.
In the doubles round, Melana Mourad and Maria Hofmeister teamed up for the first doubles of win of the season. They beat their pairing 6-3 as the final set to open the double rounds.
However, the Marauders won the next two doubles sets 6-2 and 7-6 (7) to secure the doubles point.
In the singles round, Abigail Rich won the first singles pairing of the year for the Gyrenes, which tied the game at one. Rich won in two straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to secure the first point of the year for Ave Maria.
UMary retook the lead, winning the next three pairings to clinch the match.
The two teams played out the final two singles pairings instead of calling the match once UMary got to four points.
Mariangel Nunez won the top singles as the fifth match to finish, giving the Gyrenes their second point of the day. Nunez won 6-4, 6-3 over the Marauders top player.
UMary took the final pairing which went to two different tiebreakers in the first and third sets to win with a final score of 5-2.
The loss drops Ave Maria's record to 0-3 on the year.
The Gyrenes are on the road for their next five matches. AMU gets a week and a half off before returning to the court March 14 in Orlando in a neutral site match against the Wittenberg Tigers. It is the first of three neutral site matches in Orlando for the Gyrenes. After their stretch O-Town, Ave Maria is one the road for two conference matches before finally returning home March 28.
