MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team dropped their final match of the regular season, falling to the St. Thomas Bobcats 4-1. Ave Maria's point in the match came in the top pairing in the single round.
In the opening doubles round, St. Thomas got two quick wins in the second and third pairing to clinch the point. The Bobcats won the third pairing first 6-0 and then won the second pairing 6-2.
In the singles round, St. Thomas got two more quick points with wins in the fourth and sixth pairings. The fourth was the first to finish, winning 6-2, 6-2, followed by the sixth at 6-1, 6-0.
Down 3-0, the Gyrenes got their lone point of the match in the top pairing. Clara Penido got her fifth win of the season and second in conference play with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
St. Thomas closed out the match a few moment later with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the fifth pairing.
With the loss, Ave Maria ends the regular season with a 5-7 record overall and a 2-5 record in conference play.
The Gyrenes now move on to the postseason as they enter the Sun Conference Tournament as the sixth seed. They will take on the third seeded Southeastern Fire in the quarterfinals, who finished league play with a record of 5-2. Southeastern won 4-0 when the two teams met in the regular season. The tournament is set to start April 23 in Brunswick, Georgia.
