THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team earned a hard-fought 4-2 road victory in Georgia against the Thomas Night Hawks Monday afternoon. The win was powered by two-goal performances from both junior Catherine Dalton and sophomore Claire Wrobleski.
Dalton got the Gyrenes' rolling early, burying a finish from the top of the box in the 15th minute to give Ave Maria the lead.
The Night Hawks struck back just before the break, as they snuck a goal in with three minutes left in the half.
Ave Maria responded almost instantly after halftime, as Wrobleski put the ball to the back of the net from the top of the box as well, placing the Gyrenes back in front just 21 seconds into the frame.
After fighting through the second half, Thomas was able to equalize once again in the 69th minute, setting up a tense final stretch between the Gyrenes and the Night Hawks.
The Gyrenes finally broke through and scored the game winning goal when Wrobleski netted her second goal of the match just seven minutes later. The sophmore broke out behind the defense and received a nice through ball from the midfield. After a couple dribble, Wrobleski slid the ball under a diving keeper to net the winning goal. With the two goals, Monday was her second multi-goal game of the season and the fifth of her career.
Dalton slammed the door with a composed strike in the 83rdminute, quickly turning on a feed from freshman midfielder Aviana Ferraez. It was the first assist of the freshman's career. For Dalton, Monday was also her second multi-goal game of the season and the third of her career.
The Gyrenes recorded 17 shots in the game with 11 of them on frame. The Night Hawks finished with 14 shots, 7 of them on frame.
Freshman goalkeeper Avalena DeBolt appeared in the second match of her career and made her first ever start. She partook in all 90 minutes and recorded five saves, notching the first win of her collegiate career.
With the victory, Ave Maria improves to 2-2 and finishes their stint in the Peach State 1-1.
The Gyrenes will face NCAA opponent Barry next in an exhibition match up on September 4th.
The women will be back home on Saturday the 6th to take on one of the newest schools in the NAIA, the Carolina Bruins from North Carolina. The match is part of a tripleheader on the Ave Maria campus that Saturday, with Men's Soccer and Football also in action that day.
