DALLAS — The Ave Maria Men's Soccer team closed their three-game stay in the Lone Star State with a win, taking down the Dallas Christian Crusaders 4-1 Monday afternoon. Four different Gyrenes got on the score sheet against the Crusaders. It is the highest number of unique scorers the Gyrenes have had this season.
Sava Cadjenovic opened the scoring and gave the Gyrenes the lead in the 12
th minute. It was his fifth goal of the trip and sixth of the year.
The two teams kept each other in check for the rest of the first half and the Gyrenes went into the break, leading 1-0.
Dallas Christian scored the first goal of the second half, drawing even with the Gyrenes.
The tie did not last long though as Luis Mendoza put the Gyrenes back on top with a goal in the 66
th minute. It was the third goal of his Ave Maria career and his first since 2023.
After fending off a push from the Crusaders, Jael Paraga gave Ave Maria some insurance with a goal in the 80
th minute. It was the first goal of the Texas trip for Parraga and his third of the season.
In the final minute of the game, Thomas Hoeing scored the fourth goal of the game for the Gyrenes, punctuating the win. It was Hoeing's first goal ever as a Gyrene in his in 23
rd game in the green and tanzanite.
Cadjenovic led the team with three points in the game, adding two assists to his goal. He finished the Texas trip with 12 points off five goals and two assists.
Mendoza, Parraga and Hoeing all had two points. Mateo Rolon also logged two points with assists on Cadjenovic's and Mendoza's goal.
In net, Andrija Vujakovic made 13 saves of 14 shots faced, notching his second win of the season.
With the win, Ave Maria improves to 3-2-2 on the year and closes the road trip out with a 2-0-1 record. The Gyrenes outscored their opponents 14-5 in the Lone Star State.
The Gyrenes will stay on the road for the rest of the month but will remain in state for all three matches. Ave Maria is back in action Saturday, September 20, as they travel to Pensacola Christian to take on the Eagles. It will be the first ever meeting between the Gyrenes and the Eagles on the soccer pitch. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. and the game will be streamed live on Pensacola Christian's YouTube Channel.
