Men's Soccer Runs Unbeaten Streak to Five Matches

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team continued the longest unbeaten streak in program history on Saturday, scoring four unanswered goals in a 4-1 victory over Pensacola Christian College. The 4-2-2 Gyrenes have won either won or tied in five consecutive matches, going 4-0-1 in that span. The Gyrenes have earned at least one point in six of the season's first eight matches, the most in any season since the 2018 campaign.

Ave Maria had to play from behind on Saturday, as Pensacola Christian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, thanks to a goal from Odanci Ndayisaba. Ave Maria responded less than nine minutes later, finding the equalizer in the 20th minute. Jael Parraga lofted a pass into the box, finding the foot of Mateo Rolon. From a tough angle, Rolon was able to beat the keeper to the far post, evening the score at one. The final 25 minutes of the half would pass without a score, sending the match to halftime even at one.

The score remained even for nearly 20 minutes before the floodgates opened for the Gyrenes. The eventual game-winner came in the 65th minute, when a long pass from Riley Green was misplayed by the Eagles and fell to the foot of Sava Cadjenovic, who finished to give the Gyrenes a 2-1 lead. Cadjenovic struck again almost four minutes later, this time with Parraga and Rolon getting assists.

The scoring for the Gyrenes concluded in the 77th minute, with Parraga adding a goal to his two assists. Parraga beat the Pensacola Christian defense into the box, then fired a rocket into the top of the net. PCC got a goal back in the 87th minute on a finish from Angel Pietri-Garcia, but the host Eagles could get no closer.

AMU was the more active team offensively in the victory, attempting 21 shots to 14 for the Eagles. Eleven of Ave Maria's 21 shots came on goal, compared to six for Pensacola Christian. Andrija Vujakovic picked up his third win of the season in goal, making four saves for the Gyrenes.

Ave Maria will take their five-match unbeaten streak across the Alley next week for a rematch with the last team to defeat the Gyrenes - (RV) Florida National. The Conquistadors won the first match of the season between the teams, winning 4-1 at Gyrene Field on September 1. The rematch is set for Tuesday morning in Hialeah, with kickoff scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
