HIALEAH, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team delivered a dominant performance this afternoon, shutting out Florida National 5-0. The Gyrenes scored early and often in their final non-conference game of the season.
Ave Maria wasted no time setting the tone, striking three times in the first 20 minutes. Claire Wrobleski opened the scoring in the ninth minute with her seventh goal of the season. With her eight total goals last year, she is one away from tying her freshman mark.
The Gyrenes lit up the scoreboard two more times in the first half, getting goals from Cate Cox in the 17
th minute and Catherine Dalton just two minutes after that. It was a career-high fifth goal of the season for Dalton, passing her career record of four goals in a year which she set in 2023.
The Gyrenes dictated the tempo from kickoff, keeping the ball in the attacking third and forcing Florida National's defense into constant retreat. AMU kept relentless pressure on The Conquistador's back line, forcing six saves from goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza in the match.
The Gyrenes continued to control possession and generate chances throughout the second half, outshooting the Conquistadors 20-4 overall.
Ava Conforti extended the lead in the 73rd minute with her first goal of the season with a well-placed finish.
Conforti assisted Julia Hyland's first collegiate career goal just three minutes later, capping the scoring at 5-0. Conforti's one-goal, one-assist outing highlighted the team's depth, as four different players found the back of the net in the match.
Defensively, Ave Maria was airtight, allowing just one shot on goal for the entire match. Goalkeeper Emma Schweitzer recorded the clean sheet, needing just one save to secure the shutout. Tuesday was her first solo shutout of the season, giving her 10 total in her career. Schweitzer is now one clean sheet away from matching Maddie Samuelson for the most career shutouts in a Gyrene jersey.
With the decisive win, Ave Maria improves to 4-4-1 on the season. The Gyrenes are off for the rest of the month as they await the start of league play.
Ave Maria is back in action on October 1 as they kick off conference play in a rematch with the Southeastern Fire. The Gyrenes fell 3-1 to the Fire on September 20 at Gyrene Field after scoring the opening goal in the first 10 minutes of play. Ave Maria will make the trip up to Lakeland Wednesday and will look to get Southeastern back. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the Urban Edge Network.
