DAVIE, Fla. — The Ave Maria Swim team competed in the Nova Southeastern Shark Invite December 18-19. In a field full of NCAA competition, the Gyrenes placed sixth out of seven teams on both the men's and women's sides. Both the men and women's teams saw a new school record during the invite.
Delaney Weisbruch set the new mark for the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:01.9. Weisbruch beat the previous record by nearly three seconds, which was set by Anna Szucs in October of 2024.
The women's team had seven more personal bests over the course of the two-day meet. Two swimmers hit the NAIA B-cut with Maryanna Matista swimming a 54.26 in the 100-yard freestyle and Weisbruch clocking in at 59.81 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly.
On the men's side, Sam Pilkington kept etching his name in the record books as he set the new top time in the 50-yard butterfly. Pilkington touched the wall in just 23.38 seconds and edged the previous school record by 21 hundredths of a second.
The men had four more personal bests in the meet and one swimmer reach the podium with Pilkington taking the bronze in the 100-yard breaststroke. The redshirt senior from Ontario beat the fourth place swimmer by almost half a second to reach the podium, clocking in at 54.73 seconds.
The Gyrenes are back in the pool January 10 as they host a triple dual in Port Charlotte, Florida. The meet will feature four teams, Life, Barry, New College and Ave Maria, all simultaneously competing head-to-head against each other. Ave Maria has competed in a couple double duals throughout this season, but this is their first ever triple dual in program history.
