Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 1 Keiser

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team put up a good fight against the top ranked Keiser Seahawks Wednesday night. However, three shots did squeak by as the Gyrenes fell to the Seahawks 3-0.

The first half started off very quiet with just one shot between the two teams in the opening 15 minutes. That shot was from Keiser and on goal, but keeper Emma Schweitzer was there to make the save.

Keiser's offense settled after the first 15 minutes and outshot Ave Maria 12-1 in the opening half. Five of those shots were on goal and two got by as the Seahawks took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Ave Maria's lone shot was on goal, but the Seahawk keeper made the save.

Keiser scored their third and final goal just 89 seconds into the second half.

For the whole frame, Keiser outshot Ave Maria 12-2. Three of the 12 shots were on net and Schweitzer stopped two of them. Both of Ave Maria's shots went high above the goal. Both shots were back-to-back around the 56th minute as Ave Maria played defense for most of the final 34 minutes.

Despite the loss, Schweitzer made five saves and is averaging about five stops a game in conference play.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 3-4-3 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. The Gyrenes entered the match tied with the Warner Royals in the standings with one point. Both teams lost on Wednesday, so they remained tied at one point in the table. However, both were passed by St. Thomas who now has four points.

The Gyrenes are on the road for their next two matches, starting with the Warner Royals on Saturday, October 10. The match will be a good separator between the two teams who are tied in the standings. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
