AVE MARIA, Fla. — After cancellations and forfeits, the Ave Maria Rugby team finally got on the pitch Saturday as the Gyrenes hammered the Miami Hurricanes 67-7. AMU took control of the match from the opening whistle and did not let up against the Canes.
The Gyrenes jumped out early and never looked back. A try by forward Pat Ferns opened the scoring, followed by tries from fullback Greg Higgins, inside center Brian Harrington, and scrumhalf Peter Zachmann, giving Ave Maria an early 22–0 lead.
The momentum continued in the first half as winger Jadon Scheidel crossed the line twice and wing Noah Gordan added another try to close out the half. Ave Maria went into the break with a commanding 42–0 advantage.
In the second half, Gordon and Higgins each added scores, and forward Joe Patterson broke away for the first try of his career to cap off the dominant performance.
After the match, senior Scheidel was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
It is Ave Maria's third straight win over the Hurricanes dating back to the start of the 2025 season.
With the win, AMU improves to 2-0 on the year, including a forfeit win from Florida International, which did not have enough players to fill a roster when the match was scheduled for February 14.
The Gyrenes will be back on the pitch March 14 to take on the FIU Panthers.
