Softball Drops First Game to Keiser

AVE MARIA, Fla.  — The Ave Maria Softball team attempted to host a double header against the 14th ranked Keiser Seahawks Friday, March 13th. The two teams were able to get the first game in with the Gyrenes losing in a competitive 3-1 ball game, but the second game was called in the second inning due to lightning and heavy rain in the area.

After two scoreless frames, Keiser opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. The Seahawks plated two runs off back-to-back RBI doubles.

The Gyrenes responded in the bottom of the third with a score of their own. With two on, Karsyn Moore drove a ball to left field that brought home Kaitlyn O'Neill and cut the lead in half.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth innings were scoreless for both teams as each pitcher settled in. Kaedyn Sutton only allowed two hits across the three frames and got two Seahawks to strikeout. Ave Maria registered just one hit across the three innings.

Keiser added a run in the top of the seventh to build back their two-run lead. The Gyrenes tried to make up both runs in the bottom of the seventh, but three straight ground outs ended the game before the comeback could get started.

At the plate, O'Neill recorded two of the five hits from Ave Maria. Moore had the only RBI of the game for the Gyrenes with her single that scored O'Neill in the third.

In the circle, Sutton tossed her first complete game of the season while just allowing three runs off eight hits. Sutton also struck out three batters during the game.

Ave Maria and Keiser were able to get the second game underway Friday afternoon, but around 4:45 in the afternoon, heavy rain and lightning moved into the area and the game was put on pause. It was later determined the second game would have to be resumed on Saturday with the series finale to follow after that.

Before the delay was called, Keiser's bats had woken up and scored 11 runs across the first two frames. The Gyrenes scored a run in the bottom of the first, but have quite a big hole to dig out from when the game resumes on Saturday.

Saturday's doubleheader will start at 10 a.m. and both games will be streamed live on the Urban Edge Network.
