Softball Swept by Keiser

AVE MARIA, Fla.  — The Ave Maria Softball team resumed their game that was delayed by heavy rain with Keiser on Saturday March 14th. The Gyrenes and Seahawks then played a second game after their make-up game. Keiser took both games, winning 25-2 and 5-3, to sweep the makeshift doubleheader and series.

Before the delay was called, a Karsyn Moore single to center field allowed Mia Mazzolini to score. However, Keiser scored 11 runs across the first two innings on Friday, March 13, making the game very lopsided.

The Seahawks' bats stayed warm overnight as the top of the second inning started fast. Keiser added eight more runs before the Gyrenes could end the inning. The Seahawk pitching started of the day strong by only allowing one hit in the bottom of the second. Keiser went into the third frame up 19-1.

In the top of the third, the Seahawks scored one run on two hits, extending their lead 20-1. In the bottom of the third, the Gyrenes did not make it past their first three batters.

In the fourth frame, the Seahawks scored two runs on two hits. In the bottom of the frame, Hailee Howe cracked a doubled to left center. Mary McIntire brought Howe home on a SAC Fly, giving the Gyrenes their first score of the day.

In the fifth and final inning, the Seahawks scored three more runs on four hits, extending their lead 25-2.

The Second Game on Saturday resembled the first game of the series between the Gyrenes and Seahawks.

Kaedyn Sutton returned to the circle to begin the action. Her pitching was dialed in, as the Gyrenes got the first three Seahawk Batters out in the top of the frame. The Seahawk pitching effort matched the Gyrenes, as both teams headed into the second tied 0-0.

In the top of the second Sutton gave up one hit, but the Gyrenes managed to keep Keiser scoreless. The Gyrenes fired up their bats in the second inning. Mary McIntire cranked a single to right field. A Payton Maguire double brought home two runs for the Gyrenes, putting the Gyrenes on top 2-0. Ashley Lykins singled to right field and brought home Maguire. The Gyrenes went into the third frame up 3-0.

Keiser responded and scored two runs of their own, cutting into the Gyrene lead 3-2. The Seahawks found three quick outs in the following Gyrene at bat.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth frames saw exceptional pitching and fielding from both teams. Both pitchers found a way to put the ball in play for easy outs throughout the duration. The score remained 3-2 heading into the final frame.

The Seahawks found a way to score three runs on five hits in the top of the seventh. The Seahawks took the lead for the first time in the ball game and headed into the bottom of the frame up 5-3. The Gyrenes were unable to respond to the Seahawks final inning.

After the series the Ave Maria Softball team record fell to 4-14 overall and 0-6 in the SUN Conference.

The Ave Maria Softball team will travel to #12 Saint Thomas on Friday March 20th at 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 21st at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The games will be streamed live on the Urban Edge Network.
