BRADENTON, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis program fell to 0-4 in Sun Conference play on Saturday, falling 4-0 to the Mighty Banyans of New College of Florida in the first-ever meeting between the teams. The match was played on the campus of IMG Academy in Bradenton.
The Mighty Banyans dominated in doubles play, winning the matches at the second and third flights to claim the point. The team of Patrick Janikian and Hugo Fidler claimed a 6-2 victory, while the clinching point was provided by Carlos Quinones and Timothy Phung, 6-1 winners at the third flight.
New College's dominance continued into singles play, with the Mighty Banyans winning three matches and ahead in the three abandoned matches. Fidler earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at the third flight, with Konstantin Kukaras added a 6-2, 6-1 win at the fourth flight. The final NCF point was provided by Pedro Lemos, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The road continues for the Gyrenes on Wednesday, with an NCAA Division II program on the schedule. Ave Maria battles Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, with opening serve at 3:30 p.m. The next home match is slated for Friday, April 10, when the Gyrenes face NAIA No. 3 Keiser.
