ORLANDO, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team got their first win of the season, taking down the Seton Hill Griffins 6-0. The Gyrenes dominated on the courts Wednesday afternoon, winning every single set they played.
In the doubles round, each team only sent two pairs to compete, but the Gyrenes won both sets to clinch the opening point. Marinagel Nunez and Clara Penido won the top pairing 6-2 and Melana Mourad and Elizabeth Pince followed that up with a 6-4 win in the second pairing.
In the singles round, the Griffins only had four players, so Mourad won her fifth pairing by forfeit and put the Gyrenes up 2-0.
The other four matches were all won in two-set sweeps. Nunez took the top pairing 6-2, 6-3. Penido won the second pairing without giving up a single game, posting a score of 6-0, 6-0. Maria Hoffmeister won the third pairing 6-0, 6-2. Pince rounded out the day with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the fourth pairing.
Penido won her first match earlier in the day, going 2-0 on Wednesday. For the other four Gyrenes, Wednesday evening was their first win of the season.
With the win, Ave Maria improves to 1-3 on the year.
The Gyrenes have one more match left at the UTSA Campus in Orlando as they take on the NCAA Division II Michigan Tech Huskies out of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the tennis courts.
