AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Tennis team played their final home game of the season Saturday and celebrated senior day as well. The Gyrenes said goodbye to Julien Mourad before the match in front of family members and teammates.
In the match, the Gyrenes scored their first point since March 21, but ultimately fell to the St. Thomas Bobcats 4-1.
St. Thomas won the doubles point to start the match, winning the second and third pairings each by a score of 6-0. In the top pairing, Joao Felipe Almedia and Pedro Garcia won a couple of games and were down 3-2 when the round was called.
In the singles round, Andreu Soliva won the lone point for the Gyrenes, taking the first set 6-0 and then having his opponent retire in the second set with Soliva up 1-0.
St. Thomas won the first, fifth and sixth positions to clinch the match 4-1. Senior Mourad won the most games among those three Gyrenes, winning two games in each set.
In the two matches that didn't finish, Garcia won the first set 7-6 and was lead 2-1 in the second set when the match was called. Gianmarco Punzo was knotted up at four games apiece in the second set right before the Bobcats scored their fourth point.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 1-12 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Gyrenes are on the road for their final two matches of the season. First, it is off to Hialeah, Florida, to wrap up conference play as Ave Maria takes on the Florida National Conquistadors. That match is scheduled April 15 and is a makeup of a match that was originally scheduled for February 25. Ave Maria then wraps up the season with a trip up to Winter Park to take on the NCAA Division II Rollins Tars. That match is scheduled for April 17.
