Women’s Tennis Celebrates Senior Day

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team played their final home game of the season Saturday and celebrated senior day as well. The Gyrenes said goodbye to Elizabeth Pince before the match in front of family members and teammates.

In the match, the Gyrenes fell to the St. Thomas Bobcats 4-0.

St. Thomas opened the match by taking the doubles point with a win in the second pairing. Ave Maria had to forfeit the third pairing, which gave the Bobcats two of the three sets.

In the first position, Mariangel Nunez and Maria Hofmeister played to a 3-3 tie when the round was called in favor of the Bobcats.

The Gyrenes had to acquiesce the bottom two pairings in the singles round as well putting St. Thomas up 3-0. The Bobcats won the clinching point in the fourth position, winning in back-to-back 6-0 sweeps. Pince and Hofmeister tied on the team for most games won as each collected three before the match was called.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 1-12 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

The Gyrenes are on the road for their final two matches of the season. First, it is off to Hialeah, Florida, to wrap up conference play as Ave Maria takes on the Florida National Conquistadors. That match is scheduled April 15 and is a makeup of a match that was originally scheduled for February 25. Ave Maria then wraps up the season with a trip up to Tampa to take on the NCAA Division II Tampa Spartans. That match is scheduled for April 16.
