WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Tuesday's afternoon match against the Keiser Seahawks took a little bit longer for the Gyrenes than normal due to rain in the area stopping the match for a good bit in the second half. Unfortunately, the soggy conditions could not help the Gyrenes against the reigning national champions as they fell 4-0.
Keiser struck three times in the opening half. The Seahawks opened the scoring in the 22
nd minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Gyrenes hung on for almost the rest of the frame. Keiser took five shots after their opening goal, three of which went wide and two were saved by goalkeeper Emma Schweitzer.
However, in the final two minutes of the half, the Seahawks scored twice, once in the 44
th minute and once in the 45
th. The third goal of the frame came with just seven seconds remaining on the clock.
The two got a little of the second half under their belts before rain caused a very extended delay.
When the two teams returned to the pitch, Keiser scored one final goal in the 67
th minute to take a 4-0 lead.
The Seahawks took five more shots in the second half, but all missed the net.
Offensively, the Gyrenes took just two shots, both by Catherine Dalton in the second half.
In goal, Emma Schwietzer stopped four shots and got some help from defense who stopped a ball from crossing the line in the first half.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 1-1 on the year.
The Gyrenes on the road for their next two games as they take a weekend trip up to Alabama. The Gyrenes big their trip through the Cotton State Saturday, September 5, with a match against the Faulkner Eagles. The Gyrenes played the Eagles to a 1-1 draw at home in 2025. The match is set for 4:30 Eastern, 5:30 Central, and will be streamed live on Faulkner's YouTube Channel.
