Football To Host Southeastern On Homecoming

The Ave Maria University football team looks to pick up its first Sun Conference win when the Gyrenes host Southeastern on homecoming on Saturday afternoon. The opening kick is slated for 1 p.m.
 
Tickets will be $5 for adults and $2 for students with a school ID. AMU students and staff will be admitted for free with their AMU ID. Kids under the age of 12 will also be admitted free of charge.
 
Parking in the tailgating lot next to the field house will be $5. Parking space and bleacher space is limited so please plan accordingly.
 
Ave Maria has showed glimpses of 2013 squad that finished the season 8-2 over the past couple of weeks. The Gyrenes picked up their first win of the season two weeks ago at home against Concordia (Ala.), 16-12. The Gyrenes showed their commitment to the ground game in the win, rushing the ball 51 times compared to 16 pass attempts.
 
Last week, Clayton Uecker began to return to form, completing 18-of-36 passes for 276 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for a team-high 47 yards.
 
Kurt Joseph, Tanner Bowling, and Charles Williams, who each rank in the top 20 in the NAIA in fumbles forced per game, will anchor the Gyrene defense. Brandon Ross leads the Gyrenes in tackles for a loss and ranks 25th in the NAIA in total tackles for a loss with 10.
 
Southeastern comes in with a 4-1 overall record. The Fire are coming off a 42-21 win over Birmingham Southern.
 
The Gyrenes will have to contain the Fire running back, Jarrell Reynolds. Reynolds leads the NAIA in all-purpose yards per game with 204.6 yards and in rushing yards per game with 182.8 yards on the ground. His 102 total points scored this season ranks second in the NAIA.
 
Jonathan Pearce will be handing the ball off to Reynolds. The 6-1 quarterback, averages 165.6 passing yards per game and ranks 23rd in pass efficiency in the NAIA at 133.9.
 
Of the Fire's 24 offensive touchdowns on the season, 16 have come on the ground while the other 8 have come through the air.
