Women's Soccer Week 1 Game NotesAVE MARIA, Fla. – The Ave Maria Lady Gyrenes will begin their 2014 season, traveling to Georgia to take on two NCAA opponents. The Blue and Green will first take on Georgia Southwestern (NCAA Division II) on Thursday afternoon and will conclude their road trip with Oglethorpe University (NCAA Division III) on Friday evening.
Scouting Ave Maria 0-0 (0-0 Sun Conference)Head Coach: Frank Frostino (Fourth Season)AMU will look to improve on its record setting offensive performance from last season when they open up the 2014 season this coming week. Last season Coach Frostino's squad established new school records for goals (44), points (118), assists (30), shots on goal (119) and wins. Sophomore Anne Bateman returns to the Gyrenes lineup this season, having started all 17 games last season and tallying 11 goals. Senior Alex Wardrope will provide some additional offensive firepower to the Gyrenes lineup. Wardrope contributed ten points of her own last season, starting all 17 games at the midfield position.

The Hurricanes look to rebound from a sub par season last year under third year head coach Samantha Snow. The GSW lineup will feature nine individuals who started at least 13 games last season, with only two upperclassmen included in this group. The Hurricanes offense will return their leading goal scorer from last season in junior Kaylee Krohn.

The Oglethorpe University women's soccer program will open their 2014 season on Friday when they take on the Ave Maria Lady Gyrenes. The Petrels enter this season having lost last season in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) quarterfinals to rival Berry University. Offense will be key for Oglethorpe, as they return their top two leading goal scorers from a season ago in Beatrice Menjor and Claire Stauber. The Petrels will feature an experienced lineup, with seven individuals who started at least 11 games in 2013.
