Gyrenes Lose Tight One Vs. EckerdÂ
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. – The Gyrenes traveled up the west coast to take on the division II Eckerd Tritons this Wednesday night. It was a cold and windy night under the lights in St. Petersburg as Ave Maria lost a close contest by a score of 4-3.
GAME RECAPAve Maria freshman pitchers Christian Dufresne (Rockledge, Fla.) and Andrew Steele (Northport, Fla.) held the Tritons to just two unearned runs through the first six frames. The two combined to only allowed only three hits and one walk.
The Tritons carried a slim 2-1 into the sixth until AMU freshman third baseman Andy Hernandez (Miami, Fla.) came up with a big two RBI triple down the right field line, scoring Ryan Keegan (Estero, Fla.) and Kellen Creech (Jacksonville, Fla). Hernandez took it upon himself to provide all of the scoring, knocking in all three of the Gyrenes runs on the night.
In the seventh inning, Eckerd struck back in the seventh with RBIs from Adam Moreau (Toledo, Oh.) and Carter Cashman (Clearwater, Fla.) to take a 4-3 lead.
The Gyrenes would threaten to tie the game in the top of the ninth after Rico Soto (Naples, Fla.) sent a pinch hit double into deep right field. With the tying run in scoring position, Ave Maria failed to find a way to push it across, stranding the runner at third and leaving the final score at 4-3 in favor of Eckerd.
UP NEXT: The AMU baseball team returns home this weekend for a Sun Conference series against Webber International. First pitch of game one will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Bowie's Ballpark and will be followed by a Saturday double header beginning at 11 a.m.
