AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team gave head coach Tim Speakman a milestone victory during its 10-2 and 5-0 sweep of Northwood University on Saturday.
Speakman earned his 100
th career win during game two's 5-0 shutout at the AMU Softball Field. He is 100-126 in five seasons with the Blue and Green.
The Lady Gyrenes improve to 21-19, 5-3 TSC on the season.
The Lady Gyrenes combined for 15 runs on 16 hits over the two games.
GAME 1
The Blue and Green were able to tack on runs in the bottom half of all five innings to put game one out of the Seahawks reach.
Kingsley Avery finished a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a pair of stolen bases, and a RBI.
Cheyenne Benson,
Alyssa Colding, and
Brandi Griswold all chipped in with two RBI apiece in the win.
Benson pitched all five innings of the run-rule and allowed just one earned run on six hits and fanned six.
GAME 2
Avery continued to stay hot at the plate and led the offense in game two. She finished 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Four different AMU players tallied RBI.
Emily Lemin picked up her seventh win of the season in the shutout after tossing 6.1 innings where she allowed just three hits and struck out three.
The Lady Gyrenes return to action on the road next week when they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. for a twinbill against conference foe Embry-Riddle. Games are slated to begin at 1 and 3p.m. on Friday.
