Gyrenes Fall In Late Innings to Indiana Tech

The Ave Maria University baseball team surrendered seven decisive runs in the top of the ninth inning, and lost the final game of a three game set with Indiana Tech, 11-4. The win gave the Warriors (12-2) a sweep over the Gyrenes (13-18).

For the third game in a row, Indiana Tech opened the scoring. Leadoff hitter Kyle Mead was hit by a pitch to start the game, with a walk and an error following to load the bases. The Gyrenes were able to escape major damage with a double play ball, but Mead still crossed the plate to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

The lead would be the Warriors' last until the ninth. Ave answered with two second inning runs to take the lead. Ryan Keegan, who went
3-for-4 on the day, started the inning with a double. Andy Hernandez followed with a walk, and Keegan then scored on an RBI single from Jack Yvars. AMU took the lead two batters later on a two-single from Matt Wiles.

Indiana Tech tied the game in the next half inning, with a run in the top of the third. Starter Matt Harris walked two and hit a batter to load the bases. Reliever Jesse Crosno, who allowed just one earned run over 5.2 innings of work, allowed a single to Tighe Koehring to tie the game. Crosno then got a popout and a strikeout to keep the game level

Again, Ave Maria answered with a run, retaking the lead in the bottom of the third. Conor Sullivan clubbed a leadoff double, and scored on a single from Keegan with one out in the frame.

The game was tied another time in the top of the fourth, as a leadoff error allowed Keith Tatum to score.

The Gyrenes once again retook the lead, putting a run across in the bottom of the fourth. The run scoring was aided by yet another leadoff hit, a single from Max Nell. Nell was sacrificed to second base by Wiles, and scored on an RBI single from Warnock.

Ave Maria's 4-3 lead lasted until the seventh inning, when Charlie Sipe hit a solo home run with two outs to tie the game at four.

Indiana Tech won the game with seven runs in the top of the ninth, all scoring with two outs. An RBI single from Mead, a two-run homer from Sipe, a three-run double by Glen McClain, and an RBI double by Branson Dossen supplied the runs.

Tech reliever Josh Wiesman earned the victory, and Andrew Giddens was tasked with the defeat.

The Gyrenes return to action on Wednesday at home against St. Thomas before a three game weekend series against Florida Memorial, also at Bowie's Ballpark.
