JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Ave Maria softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader at Edward Waters 8-3 and 9-6. The Lady Gyrenes improve to 9-3 on the season with the win.

In game one, AMU jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind Paige Aldred's grand slam in the top of the third. Genevieve Twigg hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it 5-0. After a pair of runs by AMU in the top of the fifth, Edward Waters scored one in the bottom half of the inning to make it 7-1. The Lady Gyrenes added an eighth run in the top of the sixth. They went on to win 8-3 in game one.

Marinna Shadley and Michella Davis each had three hits in game one.

Sadie Mosher pitched four innings and allowed one unearned run. She walked three and struck out one. Meghan Sullivan and Brittney Pressley finished out the final three innings for AMU.

In game two, AMU scored two in the first and then one run in each of the next three innings to take a 5-3 lead after four innings of play. Mosher and Pressler each hit homeruns for AMU.

Trailing 6-5 entering the seventh inning, Mosher hit her second home run of the game to tie it at six followed by a Michella Davis two-run home run to put AMU in front 8-6. The Lady Gyrenes added an insurance run on a double steal that allowed Deanna Stirtzinger to advance to home.

Stirtzinger finished with three hits in game two while five other recorded two hits in the game. Mosher finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Davis had three RBI while Stirtzinger scored two runs.

Pressler pitched all seven innings for AMU while walking none and striking out four.

Ave Maria returns to action tomorrow when they take on Calumet College of St. Joseph at 1 p.m. in Lakeland.
