NORTH MIAMI, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team lost their second Sun Conference match of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-0 to the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University. The Wildcats moved to 2-1 in conference play with the victory, while the Gyrenes have started 0-2 in The Sun Conference.
The Wildcats scored three times in the first half to take a decisive lead into the halftime break. The scoring began in the tenth minute, when Savannah Jackson found the back of the net after a give-and-go with Annet Cea. Then, in the 19th minute, Jackson scored again on a penalty kick following an Ave Maria foul. Chelsea Green added to the Wildcat total in the 41st minute, scoring on a shot from 18 yards out on an assist from Sawyer Hall.
Jackson wrapped up her hat trick in the 51st minute, scoring her third goal of the game by beating the goalkeeper from the right side. Jackson's hat trick gave her 14 goals on the season. Johnson and Wales' scoring concluded just over three minutes later, when Hall scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 54th minute.
Ave Maria attempted 11 shots in the losing effort, but were outshot 17-11 by the Wildcats. Sarah McBride led the Gyrene attack with three shots, while Emily Dalton and Meghan Precord each attempted two. McBride, Dalton, and Precord each added one shot on goal, as did Bre Ruedeman and Clare Lauderback. Defensively, Molly Jensen stopped seven shots in net.
The Gyrenes return home on Saturday afternoon for a home conference tilt with the Thomas University Night Hawks. The home match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Gyrene Field, and will be the nightcap of a doubleheader with the AMU football team playing at noon against Faulkner.
