Men's Soccer Breaks Through against Webber

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2019 season in dominant fashion on Wednesday night, rolling to a 6-2 victory over the Webber International University Warriors at Gyrene Field. The victory avenged a 3-2 overtime win for the Warriors on September 21, and marked the first home win for the Gyrenes over Webber in program history.

Ave Maria started fast on Wednesday, scoring the first four goals of the match, all in the first half. A penalty kick from Kensley Jean Baptiste found the back of the net in the ninth minute, while John Gokey scored on an assist from Raphael Rodriguez in the 22nd. Gokey's goal to give AMU a 2-0 lead just over 20 minutes in came on a corner kick from Rodriguez, whose cross was headed in.

Ulises Soto and Alessandro Conte got in on the action in the first half, increasing AMU's lead to four goals. Soto scored on a pass from Jean Baptiste in the 26th minute, while Conte's goal came on an assist from Nelson Libbert. AMU's four goal half marked their biggest of the season, and tied their season high for goals scored in a match.

The teams traded goals in the second half, with the Warriors netting three and Ave Maria responding with two. Webber's goals came in the 46th, 75th, and 88th minutes, as David Negrin Ruiz, Mateo Fernandez Sassoni, Bruno Flores found the back of the net, with Flores' goal coming on a late penalty kick.

AMU's answers came in the 55th and 85th minutes, starting with a goal from John Gokey. Gokey beat the Webber goalie on a 1-on-1, which increased Ave's lead to 5-1. Jean Baptiste scored his eighth goal of the season to conclude AMU's part of the scoring. Benjamin Koerner was credited with the assist on Jean Baptiste's second goal of the night.

With six goals on the night, the Gyrenes set a school record for goals in a conference match, as well as goals against an NAIA opponent. Ave Maria has also earned a point in each of their past three conference matches against Webber, with wins the past two seasons and a draw in 2017.

The Gyrenes continue the conference schedule on Saturday evening at Royals Field in Lake Wales, when Ave takes on the Warner University Royals. Kickoff at Warner is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The next AMU home game is slated for Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. against the University of the Virgin Islands.
