Manning and Vicioso in Contention in Kansas City

PARKVILLE, Mo.- The Ave Maria University golf teams competed on Monday at the Virginia McCoy Fall Invitational, hosted by Park University at The National Golf Club of Kansas City. The first round, which was plated at The Deuce course, saw golfers from both the men's and women's teams in the top ten and in contention.

Ave Maria's men were led by Jonah Manning, who is currently tied for second place and three shots back of leader Sam Storey from Morningside College. Manning shot a two-over 72, making birdies on the third, eighth, and 18 holes. The sophomore shot one-under on the front nine of the course, which played at a par-70 6259 yards.

As a team, the Gyrenes sit in ninth place, but are just six shots behind fourth place. Morningside currently leads the tournament at 21-over par. Gabriel DeCasas sits in the top 15 after shooting a 78, while AMU's team score of 330 was rounded by 90s from Trevor Graham and Isaac Nycum. Roch Aubert shot a 91 to complete the action for Ave Maria.

Senior Bianca Vicioso was one of just 13 golfers to break 90 on the women's side during a cold, blustery first round in Kansas City. Vicioso's 89 is good for a tie for eighth place, and sits just three shots from a spot in the top five. The leader of the tournament is Metropolitan Community College's Rachel Stous, who holds a six shot lead at four-over par.

AMU's other two golfers on the women's side were junior Alaina Irwin and senior Lydia Baldwin. Irwin shot a 98 for the Gyrenes, while Baldwin carded a 105. Truman State holds the lead in the women's event by six shots over host Park University, with Missouri Southern State another two shots back in third place.

The final round of the tournament will be played at The National course, a Tom Watson designed facility. The National is a former home to a Senior PGA Tour event. Both Ave Maria teams are set to tee off at 9:30 a.m. central time as part of a shotgun start.
