Box Score TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team saw their rally come just short on Tuesday night, as the Gyrenes fell 3-2 to the Falcons of Florida College at Qualls Field in Temple Terrace. The Gyrenes scored twice in the second half, but could not find the net for a third time to complete the comeback.
Florida College took the lead in the eleventh minute, when Groutchov Pierre scored on an assist from Camilo Arango. The Falcons then took a 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes later, as Stephen Barker scored in the 25th minute. Barker's goal, which gave Florida College a 2-0 lead that would hold until halftime, was assisted by Nick Wlodarcyzk.
Less than five minutes into the second half, the Falcons would score what would prove to be the game-winning goal. In the 50th minute, Pierre scored his second goal of the match, this one assisted by Uziel Hernandez. Pierre's goal gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead that would hold for another 16 minutes.
Ave Maria's first goal came in the 66th minute, as Ulises Soto found Alan Gonzalez to cut the Florida College lead to 3-1. The Gyrenes then pulled within one goal in the 71st minute, as Kensley Jean Baptiste scored his fifth goal of the season. With his fifth goal, the junior became the first player in AMU history to eclipse 50 points for his career.
The Falcons outshot the Gyrenes 9-8 in the contest, and held a 7-4 lead in shots on goal. Pierre led all players with three shots on goal, while Jean Baptiste was the lone Gyrene with two shots on goal. AMU goalkeeper John Turner turned away four shots to keep the Gyrenes in the contest, while Florida College's Anton Richard recorded two saves.
Tuesday's game was the first of five consecutive road matches for the Gyrenes, which runs through the entire month of September. Ave Maria's next match comes in West Palm Beach on Saturday, when the Keiser University Seahawks host the Gyrenes. Kickoff in the non-conference match at Arrigo-Vecellio Field is scheduled for noon in West Palm Beach.
