Box Score AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team just missed out on a major upset on Saturday, as the fifth-ranked SCAD-Savannah Bees escaped Ave Maria with a 4-3 victory. The Gyrenes had a match point in three needed singles matches, but could only come up with two wins against the highly-ranked Bees. Despite the loss, Saturday marks the first time the Gyrenes have been able to win more than one match against SCAD-Savannah.
The Gyrenes started the match on a positive note, winning two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. AMU's top team of Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto claimed a key victory, 7-5, over SCAD's top team, which included national top 15 player Priya Sukkahana. The triumph of number three team Aethielle Kelkboom and Katie Fuller, a 6-2 decision, allowed AMU to enter singles play with a head start.
Ave Maria's two singles victories came at the fifth and sixth positions. These two matches were the final two to finish, after the team decision had been decided. Kelly Oliviera won her match at number five, winning the first set 6-2 before falling in the second, 7-5. Oliveira then pulled out the victory in the match with a 10-6 win in the third set tiebreak. Kelkboom also won with a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 10-4.
SCAD won each of the top four singles matches to claim the 4-3 victory. Ave Maria's best chance at a win, which would have swung the match the other way, came at the number three spot. Gabrielle Benn won the first set against her opponent, then had two match points in the second set. However, SCAD was able to rally for a 7-6 win in the third set, then won the match with a 7-5 victory in the third.
Four neutral site affairs await the Gyrenes next week, beginning on Tuesday with Judson University. The Gyrenes will play Judson in Babson Park, with the opening serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
