Men's Tennis Finishes Spring Break with Win

Box Score TAMPA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team won for the fifth time this season on Saturday morning, rolling to 6-1 victory over Davis and Elkins College at the Hillsborough Community College courts in Tampa. The Gyrenes completed their Spring Break with three wins in four matches, defeating Judson, John Carroll, and the Senators.

The Gyrenes won two of the three matches in doubles play, allowing Ave to start singles action with a 1-0 overall lead. Nicholas Hofmeister and Henrique Pruner fully controlled matters at the number one position, defeating the Davis and Elkins pair 6-1. Marius Riedel and Nicholas Schneider sealed the doubles point at the number three spot with a 6-2 victory. The lone win from the Senators was provided by Andrew Shand and Jacob Bowman at the second position.

All six singles matches were decided in no more than two sets, with Ave Maria winning five of six. Hofmeister picked up the first singles point after his opponent retired in the first set. Wins by Michael Myrtil and Carlos Thireau sealed the victory for the Gyrenes. Myrtil made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the number four spot, and the French sophomore clinched Ave's third win this week with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at the second position.

Davis and Elkins' lone singles win was thanks to Alvaro Legoinha, who earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the number three spot. AMU added to their win with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the number five spot by Felipe Amorim, as well as a 6-3, 7-5 victory at the sixth position by Schneider. In four matches this week, the Gyrenes earned 16 points to just seven for their opponents.

The Ave Maria men return home on Wednesday, when the Gyrenes take on the Flyers of Lewis University. The Flyers will be playing their first match since February 23, and currently hold a 2-6 overall record. Opening serve at the AMU Tennis Facility is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
