LAKELAND, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team continued their dominance of Spring Break on Friday with a 7-0 victory over the Skyhawks of Point University. The Gyrenes have swept all three matches this week, winning 4-0 over Judson and John Carroll before Friday's sweep. The win was Ave's fourth shutout victory of the season, which increases a program-best.
Doubles play saw the Gyrenes control the action, winning both of the matches that were contested. Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto won 6-3 at the number one spot, while Aethielle Kelkboom and Kelly Oliveira won all but one point in a 6-1 victory. The Skyhawks did not contest the number three spot, awarding a forfeit victory to Ave Maria's team of Amarlia and Gabrielle Benn.
The Gyrenes did not lose more than three points in any set, and won all five contested singles matches to complete the sweep. Teodoro continued her stellar season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Point's top player, while Gabrielle Benn won 6-3, 6-0 at the third position. Julia Candiotto led 5-0 in the first set when her opponent at the number two singles spot retired, awarding another win to the Gyrenes.
Kelkboom worked a spotless match at the number four position, winning both sets by 6-0 scores. The final contested match was claimed by AMU's Oliveira, who beat her Skyhawk opponent, 6-2, 6-2. The number six singles spot was forfeited by Point, awarding a victory to Ave Maria's Nadia Mangelsdorff.Â
AMU's Spring Break concludes on Saturday, when the Gyrenes take on the Senators of Davis and Elkins College. The Senators are playing their fifth match in Florida, and have already faced Findlay, Embry-Riddle, Walsh, and Eckerd. Davis and Elkins is currently 4-7 on the season. Opening serve of the match is scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
