Women's Tennis Finishes Perfect Spring Break

Box Score TAMPA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team finished off a perfect Spring Break on Saturday morning, sweeping Davis and Elkins College at the Hillsborough Communityy College courts, 7-0. Not only did the Gyrenes win all four matches on the week, Ave Maria took each of the 22 points that were contested against Judson, John Carroll, Point, and the Senators.

The Gyrenes rolled to the doubles point, taking 18 of 23 points en route to winning all three pairs matches. The Benn sisters, Amarlia and Gabrielle, dominated their match at the number three spot. The Benns won 6-0 against the number three team from Davis and Elkins. Julia Candiotto and Lara Teodoro clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the number one spot, while Aethielle Kelkboom and Kelly Oliveira finished the sweep with a 6-3 win.

All six Ave Maria wins in singles play came in straight sets, and only two of the 12 sets saw the Senator earn more than four points. Teodoro held a 5-0 lead in the first set when her opponent retired, upping AMU's lead to 2-0. A pair of dominant wins at the bottom of the lineup clinched victory for the Gyrenes, as Oliveira and Nadia Mangelsdorff earned victories of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively.

Even with the match decided, the Gyrenes finished off the other three matches to pick up their fourth consecutive sweep. Candiotto won her match at the second position, 6-4, 6-2, and Gabrielle Benn won at the number three spot by the same score. Kelkboom earned a win in her match at the fourth position thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph.
