AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team kept on rolling on Saturday afternoon, winning their fourth match in a row with a 5-2 victory over the Mariners from the College of Coastal Georgia. The win clinched AMU's spot in The Sun Conference Tournament, which will mark Ave Maria's first taste of postseason tennis since the 2013 season. The Gyrenes also ensured that they will finish no worse than .500 in conference play for the first time in school history.
Ave Maria's day began on a high note with a sweep of doubles action. All three matches were won decisively by the host Gyrenes, beginning with a 6-1 win from Aethielle Kelkboom and Katie Fuller over Coastal's team of Azul Malatini and Molly McManus. The sister duo of Gabrielle and Amarlia Benn clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win of their own, coming at the number two slot against Rocio Arraya and Caitlyn Napier. The 15th ranked team in the nation, Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto, rounded out the sweep with a 6-2 win over Eva Rubio and Marianela Landi.
The top three flights were the first on the courts in singles play, and AMU claimed two of those three matches to open up a 3-1 lead. Gabrielle Benn rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Napier at the number three position to open singles play, and Teodoro won her eighth consecutive singles match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rubio at the number one slot. Coastal's first point of the day was provided by Landi, who rallied from one set down to topple Candiotto, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Katie Fuller provided the clinching point for the Gyrenes, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Malatini at the fifth position. Amarlia Benn, playing her first singles match of the season, added AMU's final point of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 trouncing of McManus at the number six spot. Coastal Georgia earned a point in the final match of the day, as Arraya earned a 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 win over Kelkboom.
AMU now holds a 3-1 record in Sun Conference play, which ensures the Gyrenes will finish in the league's top four. One more win would lock Ave Maria into a top three finish, which also allows AMU to avoid top-seeded Keiser in the first round of the conference tournament. The Gyrenes will have two weeks until their next match, which will also serve as the program's Senior Day. Ave Maria will host the Royals of Warner University on April 10, with the first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
