Women's Tennis Cruises to Sweep over Point

ORLANDO, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team continued their winning ways on Sunday morning, sweeping the Skyhawks of Point University, 7-0, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. The Gyrenes won two of the day's three doubles matches to take the doubles point, then won all six singles matches in straight sets to pick up their third win of the season.

Ave Maria's team of Aethielle Kelkboom and Katie Fuller started the action in doubles play, winning 6-3 at the number three spot over Point's Liza McKenzie and Tania Herrera. Point answered with a 6-4 win at the number two doubles spot, as Mariana Espinosa and Joanna Gallman defeated Kely Oliveira and Gabrielle Benn, 6-4.

The doubles point was then decided at the number one spot, as AMU's nationally ranked duo of Lara Teodoro and Julia Candiotto defeated Andrea Ovejero Fernandez and Sofia Villalobos, 6-4, giving Ave Maria a 1-0 lead heading into the singles matches.

In singles play, Ave Maria quickly clinched the match, surrendering just four total points in the first three matches to finish. Lara Teodoro continued her strong play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ovejero Fernandez at the number one spot, while Benn dominated Espinosa to the tune of 6-0, 6-0. The match was secured for AMU by Kelkboom, who picked up a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over McKenzie at the number four spot.

AMU continued to roll in singles play, increasing their lead to 5-0 following a win at the number five spot. Oliveira took the first set from Gallman, 6-4, before putting the match away with a 6-4 win in the second set. At the number six spot, Fuller defeated Herrera 6-3 in the first set, then battled to a 7-5 victory to secure another straight set victory. Ave Maria's sweep was clinched by Candiotto, who won the first set 6-4 and won a crucial point to avoid a tiebreaker in a 7-5 victory in the second set.

Next on the schedule for Ave Maria are the Eagles of Judson University. The teams met last season in a neutral site affair in Babson Park, which proved to be a dominant 4-0 win for the Gyrenes.  It will be the first of two neutral site matches this week for AMU, who will also face NCAA Division II Northwood University in Orlando on Friday. Tuesday's match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
