Women’s Soccer Gets Big Win

Box Score TIFTON, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team got a huge win in the second game in Georgia, beating the Abraham Baldwin Golden Stallions 7-0.

Six different Gyrenes found the score sheet Sunday to combine for the seven goals.

Kana Mateaki scored the opening goal for Ave Maria, which also proved to be the game winner. It was the second goal of the road trip for the Eastern Oregon transfer.

Catherine Dalton got the second goal and was followed Sofia Egger. Kaitlyn Ramos scored the next goal to put the Gyrenes up 4-0. Those goals were the first of the season for all three of them.

Claire Wrobleski scored the next two goals back-to-back. That is her second multi-goal game of the season and brings her yearly total up to four, which is the most on the team.

Ava Conforti scored the seventh and final goal of the match for the Gyrenes.

Lexi Boyko led the team in assists, helping on three of the seven goals for Ave Maria. Liliya Ward, Lauren Brooks, Dalton and Mateaki all got one assist as well.

On the defensive side, Emma Schweitzer made her third start of the season and got her first shutout of the year. The sophomore from Lutz, Florida, recorded four shutouts last season, putting her career total at five. That is third most shutouts in an Ave Maria career and is two away from tying Francesca Singleton for the second-most.

With the win, Ave Maria improves to 2-1 on the year.

The Gyrenes return home and will finally play their first match of the season in Ave Maria. The home opener is Saturday, September 14, and is the conference opener as well as the Gyrenes take on the Southeastern Fire. Last year's home match against the Fire was exhilarating scoreless tie until the final minute of the game with the Fire squeaked a goal by to win 1-0. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and is part of a triple header of Gyrene athletics on campus Saturday.
