Rugby Gets Another Big Win on Senior Day

2/8/2025 11:17:00 PM

AVE MARIA, FLA. — The AMU Rugby team celebrated their seniors, Brendan McCormack, Christian Mondarez, Sean Marshall, and Joseph Hable before their rematch against the University of Miami Hurricanes. The Gyrenes won their highest scoring match yet, beating the Canes 72-5.

It was a lot of scoring from a lot of players with Danny Harrington scoring four tries, the Zachmann brothers, Peter and Patrick each with hat-trick, and loose forward, Stephen Halisky scoring two tries and earning Man of the Match for his diligent effort on both offense and defense.

Defensively, the Gyrenes kept the Hurricanes to just one successful try again, just like they did in the season opener at Miami. UM also missed the conversion just like they did in the first match of the season.

With the win, Ave Maria improves to 3-0. With Millenia Atlantic taking the day off, the Gyrenes have moved into first place in the FCC Men Division 2 South Division. The Gyrenes got the four points from the win and the bonus point to bring their season total to 15, while MAU stayed at 10. It is becoming clear that the South Division will go to either the Gyrenes or the Macaws.

Ave Maria gets a week off before returning to the pitch. When the Gyrenes do return to the field, they will take on Millenia Atlantic with first place on the line. The Macaws have a match against Florida International before the the match against Ave Maria. If they win, both teams will be undefeated going into the match. Kickoff is set for noon at Doral Medows Park in Doral, Florida.
