ORLANDO, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team won their final non-conference game of the season, beating the SUNY New Paltz Hawks 5-2. The Gyrenes won the doubles point for the third match in a row and then won the first three singles pairings to clinch the match.
New Paltz won the first doubles pairing, but the next two went in favor of the Gyrenes. Abigail Rich and Maria Hofmeister evened up the round with a 6-2 win in the third pairing. Danna Nunez and Elizabeth Pince clinched the doubles point for the Gyrenes with a 6-4 win. It was the sixth doubles round with Nunez and Pince teaming up, which is the most among all pairs on the team.
In the singles round, the Gyrenes won the first three pairings to finish to clinch the match. Mariangel Nunez was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the second pairing.
Danna Nunez followed that up with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the third pairing. This match was after Danna Nunez was named the Sun Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Rich secured the match for the Gyrenes with a 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth pairing.
Tuesday was the last non-conference match of the season for the Gyrenes, meaning the other three singles matches played out.
Pince put the Gyrenes up 5-0 in the fifth pairing, getting the win in two sets 6-1, 6-3.
New Paltz won the final two pairing to get their two points of the match. Both pairings were decided in tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.
With the win, Ave Maria improves to 3-3 on the season and concludes their non-conference schedule.
The Gyrenes have six matches left to go on the schedule, all against Sun Conference opponents. The second half the season begins Friday, March 21, in Georgia as Ave Maria takes on the Coastal Georgia Mariners. The Mariners are 3-7 and lost their first conference match to SCAD 4-0. The match is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
