Women’s Tennis Falls to Fire

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team dropped their second to last home game Friday, falling to the Southeastern Fire 4-0. The Gyrenes won just one set in the singles round.

In the opening doubles round, the Fire got two quick wins in the second and third pairings, winning 6-1 and 6-0, respectively. In the top pairing, Clara Penido and Mariangel Nunez put up fight, winning three of the seven games they played before the doubles round was called in favor of the Fire.

In the singles round, Southeastern won three straight pairings to clinch the match. All three pairings were two-set sweeps, with half of the sets ending 6-0.

The Gyrenes were playing better in the three sets that didn't finish but just ran out of time. Maria Hofmeister won the lone set of the match for Ave Maria, winning her first frame 7-5. She was up 3-1 in the second set on the way to her fourth win of the season, but Southeastern clinched the match before she could wrap up.

Penido played just one set in the time the other five pairings played around two, forcing a tiebreaker against Southeastern's top player. Unfortunately, she fell in the tiebreaker 11-9. Danna Nunez won four games in her first set and was only down 3-1 in the second set when the match was called.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Gyrenes will play their final home match Saturday, March 29, against the Warner Royals. The Royals are 1-9 overall and 0-4 in Sun Conference play. Warner is currently 0-4 in the Sun Conference. A win on Saturday would clinch a spot in the Sun Conference Tournament for the Gyrenes.

It is also Senior Day for the Gyrenes who will honor the three seniors, Danna Nunez, Penido and Abigail Rich, on the team. The match is set to start at 11 a.m. with Senior Day festivities beginning at 10:30 a.m.
