SUN Softball Doubleheader Goes to Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, GA. - The Ave Maria University softball team traveled to Coastal Georgia on Friday, March 27th. The Gyrenes and Mariners played a doubleheader, with Coastal Georgia winning the games by scores of 9-0 and 9-1.

Kaitlyn Carolino hit a home run for Coastal Georgia to give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead in game one. In the bottom of the second, Coastal Georgia managed to score six runs on six hits, as the Mariners increased their lead to 7-0. 

In the bottom of the third, the Mariners added two more runs. The scoring effort served as the last time either team would put runs on the board. The Gyrenes were unable to rally in the top of the fifth, as the game ended 9-0, favoring the Mariners.

In the opener, Ashley Lykins was the only Gyrene to record a hit.

In the second game, the first score of the game went to the Gyrenes. Haleigh Campbell grounded out but gave Ashley Lykins enough time to score. With the Gyrenes up 1-0, the Mariners responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 4-1 lead. Coastal Georgia added two more runs in the second inning, increasing their lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Coastal Georgia recorded three hits and was able to score another two runs. Another run was scored by the Mariners late in the inning, giving Coastal Georgia a run-rule win of 9-1.

At the plate Lykins, Genevieve Peterson, Karsyn Moore, and Mia Mazzolini all recorded hits for the Gyrenes. In the circle, Lindsey Watson tallied four strikeouts.

The Ave Maria softball team will wrap up their series against Coastal Georgia on Saturday, March 28th. The Game will be streamed on the Urban Edge Network at 11 a.m.
