AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University ultimate team swept their first two games of the spring season, earning wins of 13-6 over both Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of Miami on Saturday at Gyrene Field. It marked Ave Maria's third win of the year, as the Gyrenes had toppled FGCU earlier in the fall.

In both games, the Gyrenes jumped out to early leads, as AMU led 7-3 at halftime in both contests. The Gyrenes continued to control the flow of the disc through the end of both games, leading to convincing victories.

John Paul Pontarelli led AMU with seven scores on the day, while Matthew Lesniewski chipped in with six. The defensive effort was displayed as well, with Garrett Hallinan leading the charge, scoring on defense, referred to in ultimate as a "Callahan". Hallinan led an AMU defense that put a lot of pressure on both UM AND FGCU, causing many blocks and turnovers.

The Gyrenes will return to the field this coming Saturday, playing a pair of games at Nova Southeastern University. The doubleheader will begin with a rematch against Miami at 10 a.m., with the hosts from NSU awaiting at noon.
