DECATUR, Ala. — The Ave Maria University Men's Ultimate Frisbee team wrapped up an exceptional season at the Southeastern Regional Championships on April 26-27, securing 5th place in the region during their debut at the tournament. Entering as the #3 seed, the Gyrenes demonstrated skill and determination in a tough field.
Saturday's pool play saw Ave Maria dominate, starting with a 15-9 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga, followed by a close 11-10 victory against LSU. They capped the day with a 13-12 triumph over Alabama-Huntsville, finishing pool play with a perfect 3-0 record.
On Sunday, the Gyrenes faced stiffer competition. They fell to Auburn 14-10 in a hard-fought match, despite strong individual efforts. Matthew Lesniewski led with 46 touches and 593 throwing yards, while Joseph Drost added 4 assists and a goal. Ave Maria rebounded later that day, defeating Emory 15-13. John Paul Pontarelli shone with 4 assists and 329 receiving yards, and Isaac Landrum contributed 3 goals.
The final match against University of Florida was a forfeit by the opponent, confirming Ave Maria's 5th-place regional finish. This concluded a stellar season for the Gyrenes, who ended with an impressive 35-1 record.
"God really blessed us this season - to Him we give all the glory," said Head Coach Michael Middendorf, reflecting on the team's remarkable run.
Ave Maria's inaugural appearance at the Regional Championships underscored the program's rapid rise and potential. With a near-flawless season and a solid performance in Decatur, the Gyrenes have laid a strong foundation for future success.
