Ave Maria Ultimate Frisbee Teams Make History at Florida Warmup Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. — In an extraordinary display of program strength, Ave Maria University's Ultimate frisbee teams dominated the Florida Warmup tournament hosted by USF on March 1-2, culminating in a historic championship matchup between the Varsity and Reserve squads.

The Ave Maria Varsity team showcased their exceptional skill throughout the weekend, completing a perfect tournament run. On Saturday, they opened with a commanding 13-4 victory over Miami, followed by a forfeit win against North Florida (1-0), and a decisive 13-0 triumph over Florida B. Their dominance continued on Sunday as they defeated their own Reserve team 13-4 in morning pool play and overwhelmed USF B 13-0. The Varsity squad capped off their flawless weekend with a 13-1 victory over the Ave Maria Reserves in the championship final.

The Ave Maria Reserves team also demonstrated impressive play throughout the tournament. Their weekend began with a strong 13-4 win against USF B, followed by a hard-fought 11-10 victory over Miami in Saturday's action. On Sunday, despite falling to their Varsity counterparts 4-13 in the morning matchup, the Reserves rebounded with a solid 10-7 win over Florida B to secure their place in the championship game, where they again faced the Varsity squad.

The historic championship matchup between Ave Maria's two teams marked a significant milestone for the program, highlighting the exceptional talent and depth that has been developed within the university's Ultimate frisbee program.

"This was the goal of the program, that one day our Varsity team would play our Reserve team in a tournament championship," reflected Coach Middendorf following the historic final. "God truly blessed both teams and we are so grateful for the opportunity to represent Our Lady's University."

The Florida Warmup tournament results demonstrate Ave Maria University's growing prominence in collegiate Ultimate frisbee, with both teams poised to build on this success as they continue their spring campaign.
