FORT LAUDERDALE, FL- The Ave Maria University Ultimate Frisbee team remained undefeated after traveling to Nova Southeastern University for a two-game affair on Saturday afternoon. The Gyrenes posted a dominant victory against the hosts from NSU, winning 12-3, and defeated the University of Miami 9-7, in a rematch from the prior weekend. These wins marked Ave Maria's fourth and fifth wins of their inaugural varsity season.
Ave Maria started the day strong against NSU, scoring first and never looking back. The Gyrenes went into halftime with a commanding lead of 7-1. The team remained in control the entire game, overcoming rainy conditions, with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, and displayed prowess on both offense and defense to notch a 12-3 win.Â
The offense was led by senior Zach Gunn who tallied two scores and four assists. The defensive effort was led by sophomore John Paul Pontarelli, who managed the challenging feat of scoring on defense, referred to in Ultimate as a "Callahan". Eight other Gyrenes also posted at least one block against NSU.
Next, Ave Maria faced Miami for the second time in two weeks. Again, the team came out strong going into the halftime break with a commanding lead of 7-2. However, Miami fought back in the second half, outscoring the Gyrenes 5-2. As time expired, AMU was able to hold off the onslaught, and bring home the 9-7 win.Â
The offensive effort was controlled by the electric pair of junior Liam O'Rourke and sophomore Matthew Lesniewski. O'Rourke, a team captain, posted six assists, four of which were throws to Lesniewski, who reeled in a total of five scores for the game. AMU also displayed gritty determination on defense, with nine players blocking at least one Miami disc, for a total 16 forced turnovers.
Ave Maria Ultimate is now 5-0 on the season. After playing four games over the last two weeks, the team will take time off before returning to competition. The Gyrenes now eye their next match up which is against Franciscan University. The game is slated for March 31st, at 7PM, in Steubenville, Ohio.
