Frisbee Finishes First at Conference, Second at Regionals

DECATUR, AL- The Ave Maria University Ultimate Frisbee team closed out an historic season battling at Conference and Regionals. Over the course of the two-day affair, the Gyrenes played six games, coming away with a 5-1 record. 

Entering the tournament as heavy underdogs, the Gyrenes received a fifth place seeding out of five teams. Day one consisted of Conference play; the Gyrenes were slated to play four games.  The team's first match up was against the tournament's #1 seed, nationally ranked No. 23 Union University. After a back-and-forth affair in the first half, the team pulled ahead in the second half and earned a 13-8 victory. Next the team moved passed Georgia College with a dominant 13-3 performance. 

The Gyrenes' next game was against Embry-Riddle. Ave Maria got off to a slow start, trailing 5-1. However, the Gyrenes were able to rally and earn an 11-7 comeback win. The final game of the day was against No. 36 Berry College. The team was able to overcome their opponent and as time expired the Gyrenes stood on top, 12-8. 

Ave Maria finished day one with a perfect 4-0 record, becoming conference champs for the first time in school history. 

Day two was Regionals play, where teams battled to earn a bid to Nationals. The Gyrenes were seeded firt, with a semi-finals match up against Embry-Riddle. This time the Gyrenes started strong and never looked back, winning 15-5. 

Ave Maria now advanced to the Regional Championship for the first time, with a rematch against Berry College. The Gyrenes received the disc first and immediately marched down the field to score. However, Berry fired right back, and had the lead going into halftime, 8-6. The Gyrenes stayed focused, fighting back and even took the lead 14-13 in the final minutes of the game. However, they could not close out the game, falling to Berry 15-14.
 
This marks the end of Ave Maria Ultimate Frisbee team's first season as a varsity sport, which ended with a 19-2 season record, the best in school history.
