AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Ultimate Frisbee team opened their season in dominant fashion on Friday night, shutting out FGCU 13-0 in a rainy home opener on Gyrene Field.
The night began as the Gyrenes gathered together for their pre-game tradition, praying the rosary and making a Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary, dedicating their season to her in hopes that God's will would be done. Despite the constant downpour, Ave Maria came out strong and jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the first half, catching FGCU off guard with their aggressive offense.
FGCU's defense pushed back, forcing several turnovers, but Ave's offense was relentless. Going into halftime, the Gyrenes held a commanding 7-0 lead, with key plays from Matthew Lesniewski, Samuel Monastra, and Isaac Landrum.
In the second half, Ave Maria continued to dominate. On the defensive end, John Paul Pontarelli and Vincent Morlino made critical defensive plays that kept FGCU off the scoreboard. Their efforts secured Ave's shutout victory, sealing the game with a final score of 13-0.
Head Coach Michael Middendorf reflected on the game afterward, saying, "It was a really strong start to the season. We have never played in these kinds of rain conditions before, but the team adjusted well. God really blessed us today, and we are now going to get ready to play at the USF tournament next Saturday."
With the win, Ave Maria sets the tone for a promising season ahead. Their next challenge comes on the road as they prepare to face tough competition at the USF tournament.
